What Is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a TRAI-regulated process that allows you to switch your mobile network operator while keeping the same phone number. So if you're moving from Airtel, BSNL, Vi (Vodafone Idea), or any other Indian operator to Jio, you don't need to change your number — just your SIM.
Before You Start: Eligibility Check
Make sure you meet the following conditions before initiating a port request:
- Your current SIM has been active for at least 90 days.
- You have no outstanding dues on your current plan (especially for postpaid connections).
- Your number is not under any active MNP freeze period (90 days after a previous port).
- You have a valid Aadhaar card or other KYC document for the new Jio SIM.
Step 1: Generate Your Porting Code (UPC)
The Unique Porting Code (UPC) is a required code to initiate the port. To get it:
- Send an SMS from the number you want to port.
- Type: PORT <space> your 10-digit mobile number
- Send it to 1900.
- You will receive a reply SMS with your UPC code. This code is valid for 4 days.
Example: Send PORT 9876543210 to 1900
Step 2: Visit a Jio Store or Authorized Retailer
Take the following to your nearest Jio Store or a Jio-authorised retailer:
- Your existing SIM (number to be ported)
- Your UPC code (received via SMS)
- Aadhaar card (original + photocopy)
- A passport-size photograph
- Alternate contact number (optional but helpful)
The retailer will fill out a Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and submit the port request along with your new Jio SIM issuance.
Step 3: Complete Biometric or OTP-Based KYC
Jio uses Aadhaar-based eKYC for SIM activation. You'll either:
- Biometric KYC: Fingerprint verification at the store using Jio's device — instant and paperless.
- OTP-based KYC: An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar; enter it at the store to verify.
Step 4: Wait for Port Completion
After submission, the porting timeline works as follows:
| Step | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Port request submitted | Day 0 |
| Current operator notified | Within 24 hours |
| Porting window (typically overnight) | Day 3–4 (within 7 working days for same-circle) |
| New Jio SIM activates | After porting completes |
You'll receive SMS updates throughout the process. Your old SIM will stop working first, and within a few hours, the new Jio SIM will activate with the same number.
Step 5: Activate Your New Jio SIM
- Insert the new Jio SIM into your VoLTE-compatible phone.
- You may need to dial 1977 to complete activation if prompted.
- Select a Jio plan recharge via the MyJio app or at the store.
- Once active, your number is fully ported to Jio.
Tips for a Smooth Port Experience
- Clear any outstanding bills with your current operator before sending the port SMS.
- Use the UPC within 4 days — if it expires, generate a new one.
- Port requests submitted Monday–Thursday typically complete faster.
- If your port is rejected, your operator must provide a reason via SMS — common reasons include pending dues or an incorrect UPC.
Porting to Jio is a straightforward process when you're prepared. With India's MNP rules designed to protect consumers, the entire process is regulated, transparent, and usually hassle-free.
